Sally Lewis - Chief Officer

Sally Lewis

Chief Executive Officer

Sally Lewis gained a B.A. honours degree in English Literature and Language from the University of Wales. She later completed postgraduate studies in London where she qualified as a Probation Officer.

Sally has been employed by Berkshire, London and Lincolnshire Probation Services. She has undertaken a wide range of operational duties both as an officer and middle manager. Sally completed a two year Home Office management secondment, piloting Public Interest Case Assessment and establishing Bail Information Projects in England and Wales. This involved national developmental work with police, courts, CPS and the prison service.

For two years Sally held a multi agency middle management role based in a police intelligence unit and managed one of the pioneer multi agency public protection schemes which were the fore-runners of national MAPPA arrangements.

As an Assistant Chief Officer Sally held a public protection portfolio, leading work with dangerous offenders and victims of crime. In addition she held lead senior management responsibility for statutory partnerships with prisons, courts, youth offending services and safeguarding children arrangements. Sally was appointed as Chief Officer for Avon and Somerset Probation Area in January 2008.

Anne King

Anne King

Assistant Chief Officer for Interventions

Anne King graduated with a B.A. in English Language and Literature from Leeds University. She worked briefly as a Social Worker and completed an M.A./CQSW at Leicester University in 1981.

Anne has 30 years experience of working for the Probation Service in a variety of front line and management roles.

During 14 years as a Middle Manager Anne led a field team, established the first Juvenile team in Avon (in pre Youth Justice Board days) and was seconded for 9 years to the Prison Service, where her responsibilities included having the lead for Lifer Management, Public Protection and Safeguarding, moving to be Head of the Offender Management Unit.

As an Area Performance Manager Anne has developed work on performance and service delivery areas, had responsibility for field and specialist teams and represents the Service at a range of multi -agency committees including the Local Criminal Justice Board Victims and Witnesses group.

Anne has a strong commitment to staff and professional standards, having worked on National Committees through the National Association of Probation Officers and is currently the Chair of the National Charity for Probation and CAFCASS staff, The Edridge Fund.

Anne has responsibility for Victim Services, Approved Premises, Accredited Programmes and Community Payback.

David Thomas

David Thomas

Local Delivery Unit Leader for Somerset & North Somerset

David Thomas holds a degree in Psychology and a CQSW. He also has an Open University Management Certificate.

David has worked for the probation service for 26 years in 4 different probation areas and has been in management roles for the last 18 years. David has managed field teams and probation staff in a large local prison. As a senior manager he has had responsibility for fieldwork divisions, prisons and approved premises.

Before coming to Avon and Somerset David was an Assistant Chief Officer responsible for Information Services, Performance, Quality, Inspections and Improvement.

David started working for Avon and Somerset Probation Area in October 2008 as this Assistant Chief Officer for Offender Management. As such he has been responsible for all Offender Management activity in Avon & Somerset, including Courts and Public Protection, and setting the strategic direction for these aspects of service provision.

David has management experience of organisational re-structuring, organisational self-assessment, project planning and implementation of business change activity. He has understanding of partnership working at senior levels and negotiation of services with partner agency representatives. David is the Avon and Somerset MAPPA Strategic Management Board co-chair. He developed the Resource Allocation application in use in Avon and Somerset.

marilyn harrison

Marilyn Harrison

Local Delivery Unit Leader for Bristol

Marilyn Harrison qualified as a probation officer at Bristol University in 1992. She later became an associate member of the Chartered Management Institute, having completed her Level 4 Diploma in Management studies in 2003.

Marilyn previously worked for the Metropolitan Police force where she was a CID officer in the area’s Serious Crime Unit. After qualifying as a probation officer and working for a short period for social services in the North Bristol Child Protection team, she was employed by Avon Probation Service in 1996.

Marilyn was promoted to a middle manager post in 2002 and managed a number of field teams in Bristol. During this time she also focussed on public protection and was an effective MAPPA chair. She was appointed to an area management post within Offender Management in 2008, with responsibility for Offender Management Teams. Marilyn has also held responsibility for overseeing the partnership with courts and working with magistrates and judges on behalf of the service. Most recently she has organised the area’s highly successful Magistrates’ Conference.

Peter Brandt

Peter Brandt

Local Delivery Unit Leader for South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset

Peter Brandt has worked in Probation for over 20 years, initially working as a Probation Service Ancillary in the Kidderminster team prior to undertaking a Diploma in Social Work at Bristol University. He returned to practice as a Probation Officer in Worcester prior to moving to Somerset in 1996. 

As a Probation Officer Peter specialised in working with those who had committed sexual offences, perpetrators of Domestic Violence and those who committed racially aggravated offences. As a Middle Manager he was given responsibility for Glogan House Approved Premises, and also Brigstocke Road Approved Premises. Later Peter became involved in the Crossroad Project, a European Social Funded Project aimed at getting people back into employment for whom their offending history was proving a barrier. Moving into the Business Development Unit Peter have had oversight on  the measuring and reporting of performance. Additionally he trained as a European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) assessor and led the Trust through its EFQM Assessment. He has led on other externally recognised quality assurance awards and internal audits subsequently.

In January 2011 he was appointed to the post of Assistant Chief Officer managing Offender Management in both South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset Local Authority areas. In partnership he chairs both of the local Reducing Reoffending Boards, the Bath and North East Somerset Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Strategic Partnership  (IVASP)  and sits on the Youth Services Management Boards and Safeguarding Boards. 

Diane Mcadam

Diane McAdam

Assistant Chief Officer for Business Development & Information Technology

Diane McAdam graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1986 with an honours degree in Genetic Engineering.

Diane spent several years running her own businesses. She then went on to work for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Connexions, developing projects to engage hard to reach individuals and communities particularly in the area of Education and Training.

Diane then ran a large community partnership before joining Avon and Somerset Probation Area in 2004 to manage a European funded Employment and Training project for the Department of Work and Pensions. Following the successful completion of this project she went on to manage our Education Training and Employment and Business Development teams. The success of this has been most recently recognised in their obtaining the matrix excellence award and winning the national Probation Team of the Year 2009. Diane was responsible for developing the successful regional Education, Training and Employment consortium which gaining European funding to deliver the ‘XL’ Project 2007-09.

Diane was promoted to Assistant Chief Officer in 2007 and currently manages Business Development, Information Technology and Information. Her responsibilities include performance management, Best Value, Education, Training and Employment, commercial activity, income generation and Information Assurance.

Annette Hill

Annette has a MSc in HR from Sheffield Hallam University gained in 2002, and a BA(hons) in French and Art (1987). She spent 23 years working in the NHS; in general management for 10 years, gaining a Diploma in Health Services Management, then in Leadership Development, including a post as a regional manager for the NHS graduate management scheme. This enabled her to focus on her strong interest in developing people.

Annette is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and is a membership upgrade assessor. She is also a Fellow of the CMI. A MBTI practitioner, Annette is also qualified to use SHL psychometrics and personality profiles. Having a keen belief in the value of coaching and mentoring Annette is an experienced and qualified coach. She is passionate about the value HR can deliver to organisational development and in particular, in enabling line management to bring out the best in their team members.

Annette’s NHS career was very diverse, spanning different types of organisation, based in the Midlands, London and the South West, as well as a national role. Her most recent role involved leading the HR process for a major organisational change spanning 4 Primary Care Trusts in London.

Annette joined the Trust in April 2011, and has responsibility for all aspects of HR, Training, and Health and Safety leading the Trust to reaccreditation of OHSAS18001 in 2013.

Danielle Neale

Director of Finance and Board Treasurer

Danielle Neale is a Qualified Accountant and gained 4 years experience in Auditing and Leading Audit Teams, the preparation of Financial Accounts and Taxation working in a Chartered Accountancy firm.

Moving to work in the NHS, Danielle undertook a wide range of financial roles in Trusts, Health Authorities and hospitals over a 10 year period. These included being a Deputy Director of Finance and Business Planning and a Director of Finance and Performance Management.

Danielle’s experience within the NHS includes Strategic Financial and Business Planning, the implementation and review of performance management indicators across multi-disciplined organisations, responsibility for Capital Programmes, including leading financial aspects of a large PFI Hospital development and negotiation of annual contracts with Commissioning Organisations and NHS Hospitals.

Danielle has delivered training for regional trainees in the NHS and she undertook a mentoring role for staff studying for professional accountancy exams.

Danielle was appointed to Avon and Somerset Probation Area in September 2003 as Director of Finance and Board Treasurer.
